CHAPTER THIRTEEN

At the top of the stairs, Gavin found himself tensing and actively trying to suppress any attempt to channel his core reserves. He didn’t want to summon that power too quickly, worried that doing so might reveal their presence, or somehow benefit Tenender.

Tristan moved slowly. He was getting weaker by the moment, and it seemed to Gavin that there may not be anything he could do to help him. Even if they found Tenender—and the only reason Gavin hadn’t tried to destroy the enchantment that might provide a link between them was because he hoped to track him—then Tristan still might not survive.

Gavin felt conflicted about that. Tristan was his mentor and had been responsible for training him to the point where he was the Chain Breaker. But he also had not been completely honest with him over the years.

“You can stay back if you need to,” Gavin said.

Tristan held his gaze. For a moment, there was a flicker of the confidence that he had long had, and then it faded. “I don’t need to stay back, and I don’t need you to look out for me.”

“I can see how tired you are. If it’s anything like what I’m experiencing—”

“I doubt that.”

“We should move quietly,” Imogen whispered.

She was practically gliding, and it seemed to Gavin that she was flowing on what looked like wind, though her feet did not leave the ground. He could not help but feel the sense of power coming from her with the way she was drifting. He had not seen her using this technique before, but it was one he thought he might be able to replicate, but only if he had an opportunity to practice.

And at this point, practice was not something he wanted to risk.

Tristan, on the other hand, didn’t seem to take on that same challenge. He drifted in the same way, flowing after her. He moved quickly, seeming to easily recognize the pattern and following Imogen, as if drawing on some different sort of power. And maybe that was what he was doing.

“What do you think?” Gavin asked Gaspar. “I don’t suppose you can feel anything.”

“You keep assuming I have some sort of magical connection, boy, and I have made it quite clear I do not.”

“I know, I just thought I would see whether there was anything you might be able to do, or whether there was anything in the enchantments you have that could help.”

Gaspar laughed. “That’s not all you’re trying to do.”

“No. That’s not all I’m trying to do.”

He looked around. “I don’t feel anything.”

“Do you think you should?” Gavin asked.

“Well, I’m accustomed to not feeling things, and accustomed to being the one who is at a disadvantage here, so yes. Let her take the lead,” Gaspar said, nodding to Imogen. “Besides, I think she enjoys leading.”

She looked back at them, and Gavin didn’t need for her to say anything for him to know that she wanted silence. It was an unspoken command, and she radiated it.

They slipped along the hallway, and there was still nothing.
